I painted Great Sage as one of my "Five animals of Kungfu" series. In Chinese culture the monkey is seen as being simultaneously wise and foolish, perhaps best exemplified by the character Sun Wu Kong; the monkey king from the tale Journey to the West. I tried to emphasise the emotional depth and intelligence of the monkey in this piece, which I painted in gouache on hot press paper.
